Mitchell, 20, hit .327 (74-226) with 11 home runs, 50 RBI, 64 runs scored and 35 stolen bases as a junior in 2009, helping the Tigers to their sixth NCAA title. He led LSU in stolen bases, walks and on-base percentage (.470).

Mitchell was named Most Oustanding Player of the College World Series after going 8-23 (.348) with two home runs, two doubles, a triple and seven RBI in six games. He hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the championship game vs. Texas, staking the Tigers to a 3-0 lead en route to an 11-4 victory.

The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder was ranked by Baseball America as the Best Athlete and Fastest Runner among draft-eligible college players. He and teammate Chad Jones became the first two student-athletes to win a BCS national title (2007) and CWS title.

Mitchell posted 24 receptions for 274 yards as a wide receiver for the Tigers football team from 2006-08, including their championship season of 2007.

Mitchell, who was recommended by White Sox scouts Warren Hughes and Nick Hostetler, will make his professional debut with Class A Kannapolis on Thursday.
