White Sox invite 15 players to Spring Training01/14/2010 4:03 PM ET
CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with right-handed pitchers Greg Aquino and Daniel Cabrera, left-handed pitcher Erick Threets, infielder Freddie Bynum and outfielder Jason Botts. All five players, in addition to 10 players within the White Sox system, have received non-roster invites to the club's spring training camp in Glendale, Ariz.
Outfielder Jordan Danks, the younger brother of White Sox starting pitcher John Danks, 2009 first-round draft pick Jared Mitchell and infielders Brent Morel and C.J. Retherford headline the list of players within the organization who have received invites to major-league camp. Eight of the 15 spring training invitees have major-league experience.
Danks, 24, hit .266 (107-402) with 23 doubles, nine home runs, 41 RBI and 75 runs scored over 103 games between Class A Winston-Salem and Class AA Birmingham in 2009, his second season in the White Sox organization. He enters the 2010 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 5 Prospect in the White Sox system. Danks was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the June 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
Mitchell, 22, hit .296 (34-115) with 12 doubles, two triples and 10 RBI in 34 games in his professional debut with Class A Kannapolis in 2009. The 6-foot, 195-pound outfielder enters the 2010 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 Prospect in the White Sox organization. Mitchell was selected by the Sox in the first round (23rd overall) of the June 2009 First-Year Player Draft after leading LSU to the College World Series title.
Morel batted .281 (135-481) with 33 doubles, 16 home runs and 79 RBI in 128 games with Class A Winston-Salem. The 22-year-old hit a league-leading .435 (27-62) and finished fifth in on-base percentage (.456) over 16 games for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League. He enters the 2010 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 4 Prospect in the White Sox organization. Morel was drafted in the third round of the June 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
Retherford, 24, hit .297 (142-478) with 46 doubles, 10 home runs and 76 RBI in 128 games with Class AA Birmingham. He led all of the minor leagues in doubles and was named to the Southern League midseason and postseason All-Star teams. Retherford also reached base in 26 consecutive games from August 2-31 (.337, 33-98), the sixth-longest streak in the SL. He was signed as a free agent on June 25, 2007.
White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Sunday, February 21, with physicals and a workout scheduled for the same day. Position players will report and undergo physicals on Friday, February 26. The first full-squad workout also will take place at that time.
