Chevrolet Pride Crew - Getting to know Colleen, Christa, and Nora

COLLEEN - TEACHING YOUNG SOX FANS

View Colleen's photo gallery

School you teach in: Ridge Lawn School in Chicago Ridge

Grade you teach: Kindergarten (5 and 6 year olds)

How long you have been teaching: This is my second year teaching, but first year teaching Kindergarten.

Favorite part about teaching: Not a day goes by where I don't laugh. The kids are hilarious without trying to be. At the beginning of the year when some students had a hard time remembering my name, I told them they could call me Miss Beautiful. Some of them still call me that lovely (and ever so suitable) name and have no idea why I think it's so funny.

Funny thing you have heard a student say: Kindergarteners say something funny every single day! It is just too hard to pinpoint one thing! One of my favorite memories from teaching 2nd grade was when I was going through journals and came across a list one student created. It stated their "likes" and "dislikes." The dislikes had me falling down laughing. The student's dislikes included: smart cars, Elvis, wet doorknobs, and Sasquatch. I never really thought about how disturbing wet doorknobs were until I read this particular journal entry.

Grade you teach: 5th grade (10-11 year olds)

How long you have been teaching: Two years

Favorite part about teaching your age group: They are still young enough to like their teacher, but they are old enough to be independent.

Funny thing you have heard a student say: "My wish would be to grow a beard, with a villain mustache" (said by a girl) and, "How old do you want to be when you die?"

School you teach in: I am a primary special education teacher at a Chicago Public School in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

How long have you been teaching: I am in my 9th year of teaching, and currently teaching reading and math to students with disabilities between the ages of 5 and 8. Occasionally, I also have to teach students strategies to help them control their emotions and/or behaviors.

Favorite part about teaching: I enjoy teaching the young kids because they usually have a love for school and their teacher.

Best excuse I have heard for not finishing homework: The best excuse I have heard for not receiving homework was "I fell asleep." I then follow that with "You mean to tell me, you fell asleep from the second you got home from school yesterday to this morning?" I then get a blank stare and no response.
