A's making most of life on the road

Road trips have worked out well for the A's so far. The A's took two of three games in Cleveland, finishing with a 7-1 loss on Sunday, their first road defeat of the season. They hope to keep up their strong road momentum vs. the White Sox on Monday.

Athletics probable pitcher

Greg Smith

  • #23 LHP
  • (0-0) 3.00 ERA 5 SO
Smith made his much-anticipated Major League debut in his last outing against the Blue Jays. The 24-year-old lefty, who was acquired as part of an offseason trade that sent No.1 starter Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks, survived a rough first inning en route to allowing three runs on two hits while striking out five. Smith did struggle with his control, though, surrendering five walks over six innings of work. A spot in Oakland's starting rotation was created for Smith when right-hander Justin Duchscherer was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right biceps.

White Sox probable pitcher

Mark Buehrle

  • #56 LHP
  • (1-0) 8.31 ERA 2 SO
Buehrle gained a form of redemption Sunday night, after getting pummeled for seven runs on seven hits over 1 2/3 innings during his Opening Day start in Cleveland on Monday. Against the Tigers, Buehrle yielded two runs on seven hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out one. Buehrle induced double-play grounders in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings in order to stem the Tigers? damage. Due to Tuesday?s off-day and Thursday?s rainout, Buehrle will have seven days in between starts. He was pushed back to face Oakland because of their left-handed laden lineup. Buehrle has a 3-9 record with a 3.86 ERA lifetime against the A?s, but most of that trouble has come in Oakland, where he is 0-6.
