Hughes out to reverse misfortune

Struggling Yankees righty Phil Hughes gets to try again on Thursday, making his fifth start of the season against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. A Chicago newbie, he'll hope for better luck after faring 0-3 in the three other parks he's debuted at this season -- Kauffman Stadium, Fenway Park and Camden Yards.

Yankees: The adjustment period continues for Hughes, who suffered his third consecutive loss on Friday at Baltimore, allowing five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Yankees outwardly say they are not concerned about Hughes' early lack of results, even though he is winless in his first four starts. Joe Girardi believed that Hughes threw the ball better in Baltimore and that he could build off the effort. Hughes actually allowed one run through the first five innings before the wheels fell off. This will be Hughes' first career start against the White Sox and his first at U.S. Cellular Field.

Floyd asked to limit Yanks' damage

Gavin Floyd has the task on Thursday night of keeping the Yankees in the ballpark, while trying to prevent the White Sox first series sweep and three-game losing streak this season. Floyd and John Danks were two points of concern in the rotation coming into the season, but both have responded well during the season's first three weeks.

White Sox: After carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning during last Saturday's home start against Detroit, Floyd flirted with history once again Thursday in Baltimore by retiring the first 12 hitters he faced. In fact, Floyd allowed one questionable Kevin Millar hit until Nick Markakis launched a two-run, game-tying home run with two outs in the sixth. Over his last two starts, Floyd has allowed three hits over 13 1/3 innings, without giving up an earned run. His true test could come Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field against the Yankees, as he holds a 15.00 ERA when facing the Bronx Bombers in just three career innings.

Joe jolts Yanks (12-11) (12-9)

White Sox 7, Yankees 6

Late rally spoiled

Phil Hughes lasted only two innings because of a pair of rain delays, and the extra work for the Yankees' bullpen proved costly, as a game-tying single by Morgan Ensberg in the seventh was undone by Joe Crede's game-winning single off Joba Chamberlain in the ninth.

Crede caps victory

On the night Jim Thome passed Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews to move into 19th place on the all-time homers list with No. 513, Joe Crede was the hero, hitting a walk-off single in the ninth inning. Gavin Floyd endured a pair of rain delays, lasting six innings and allowing five runs.
