Thome, White Sox respect Halladay

In the midst of a four-game losing streak, White Sox hitters have managed just six runs while hitting a collective .190 (24-for-126). On Sunday, things may not get any better as they are set to face the ace of the Blue Jays staff, Roy Halladay.

White Sox: The big right-hander attacked the strike zone against Baltimore on Sunday, giving up just one run via Brian Roberts' home run over 6 2/3 innings. Contreras struck out three and walked three, in evening his season's ledger. Contreras holds a 2-1 career mark against the Blue Jays, with a 1-1 record at Rogers Centre.

Rehabbing Rolen a pleasant surprise

Scott Rolen has provided a steady bat for a Blue Jays offense that's struggled to find consistency this season. Toronto's third baseman has been a welcome addition, showing no ill effects of the finger injury that sidelined him to begin the season.

Blue Jays probable pitcher

Roy Halladay

  • RHP
  • (2-4) 3.26 ERA
Blue Jays: Halladay turned in one of his best outings of the season on Tuesday, but he absorbed yet another hard-luck loss. It marked the third straight complete-game loss for Halladay, representing the first time a Toronto pitcher lost three consecutive full efforts since Jim Clancy in 1980. Halladay's current run of four straight complete games is his longest such streak since 2004, though he's only received eight runs of support over his last four outings. In his last start, Halladay wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision against the Red Sox, yielding one run on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 8 2/3 innings at Fenway Park. Halladay is 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 career games against Chicago.

Jays take series from Sox (14-15) (15-17)

Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3

Sox skid ongoing

Jose Contreras was touched by the Blue Jays for four runs in the first three innings on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre, but he found his groove and held Toronto scoreless the rest of the way. But aside from a three-run fourth, the White Sox hitters were stymied by Roy Halladay.

Halladay a winner

Entering Sunday, Roy Halladay had thrown four complete games in a row, but had been saddled with a loss in the past three. On this day, manager John Gibbons opted to pull his starter in the eighth, and it worked out just fine, as the Toronto bullpen preserved a one-run lead for its ace.
