Twins eyeing Central control

The Twins travel to Chicago for the opener of a three-game set against the White Sox in a test of their early-season success against the AL Central.

Twins probable pitcher

Nick Blackburn

  • RHP
  • (2-1) 3.52 ERA
Twins: The right-hander labored a bit in his last start, but he made pitches when necessary. Despite not being completely sharp, Blackburn delivered a quality start, pitching seven innings while allowing three runs on eight hits. Blackburn said that he's pitching better later in outings when some of his adrenaline wears off. The hope is that he can start to transfer that earlier in outings. When Blackburn effectively mixes in his cutter and sinker with a strong curveball and slider, he can be one of the most dangerous pitchers on the Twins staff. He'll face the White Sox for the third time this season. He's 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in his first two starts.

Over the six-game losing streak, the White Sox offense has gone missing, as the team has combined to hit just .170 (32-for-188) during the skid. According to center fielder Nick Swisher, the team is not discouraged, however.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • RHP
  • (2-1) 3.16 ERA
White Sox: Floyd will have a chance to break his string of bad luck against Minnesota when he faces the Twins at home on Tuesday. Floyd suffered his third loss when facing the Twins in as many career starts, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings during Tuesday's 3-1 setback at the Metrodome. Floyd struck out one and walked three, giving him 15 strikeouts and 15 walks in 31 1/3 innings this season. The big blow against Floyd on Tuesday was Jason Kubel's two-run home run.

History eludes Floyd in last frame (16-15) (15-16)

White Sox 7, Twins 1

Mauer breaks it up

Through 8 1/3 innings on Tuesday, the Twins had been held to just an unearned run on Jason Kubel's sacrifice fly, without collecting a single hit against Gavin Floyd. At that point, Joe Mauer connected on a double that ended the no-hit bid, though the White Sox held on for the victory.

Righty two outs away

After a 7 1/3-innings close call on April 12, Gavin Floyd again put himself on the precipice of a no-hitter on Tuesday, entering the ninth without having allowed a hit. But with one out, the Twins' Joe Mauer hit a double, ending Floyd's bid, though the White Sox won the contest.
