Sox ready to build confidence on road

Friday night's contest at Safeco Field marks the first of a 10-game, West Coast road trip for the White Sox, starting a stretch in which they will play 16 of 22 games on the road. Chicago will look to make up for a recent string of hard times away from U.S. Cellular Field.

White Sox probable pitcher

Jose Contreras

  • RHP
  • (2-3) 4.08 ERA
White Sox: Facing the Blue Jays in his last start, Contreras suffered a hard-luck, complete-game loss. He allowed three of his four runs in the third inning, yet was dominant to finish the game. The right-hander retired 16 straight batters from the third inning to the eighth inning. Over his eight innings, Contreras allowed a total of four runs on six hits, walking none and striking out five batters.

Jeff Clement figures to be in the Mariners' starting lineup in Friday night's series opener against the White Sox at Safeco Field. He spent Thursday night resting following a tough 10-day stretch.

Mariners probable pitcher

Carlos Silva

  • RHP
  • (3-1) 4.20 ERA
Mariners: Silva had been the rock of the rotation until his start on Sunday against the Yankees. He went just three innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs. His ERA went from 2.79 to 4.20. His problem was his sinker was too high in the zone and the hitters were teeing off. He needs to spin it low and inside to right-handers to be effective. Silva has not fared well against the White Sox over the years. He is 4-9 with a 5.55 ERA in 18 appearances. He was 0-3 last year with the Twins.
