Floyd chooses focus over feel

White Sox left-hander Gavin Floyd has taken a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and -- in his last start -- into the ninth inning this season. He says it's not how he feels before a game, it's how he focuses during the game.

White Sox: For the second time this season, Floyd came within five outs of hurling a no-hitter. On April 12, at home against Detroit, Floyd lost his no-hitter on Edgar Renteria's one-out single to right-center in the eighth. On Tuesday against the Twins, Floyd carried the no-hitter one inning further, losing the chance for history on Joe Mauer's one-out double to left-center in the ninth. Floyd struck out four and walked three in picking up the 7-1 victory. He has a 0-1 record against the Mariners but has not allowed an earned run over two career appearances at Safeco Field.

Right-hander Miguel Batista bounced back strong the last time he had a poor outing. He'll look to do it again as the Mariners honor moms by using pink bats on Sunday against the White Sox.

Floyd exits in fourth

Gavin Floyd didn't have his no-hit-bid stuff this time out, allowing five runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. The White Sox broke out for two runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Jim Thome and A.J. Pierzynski, but they could only get one more run, on Carlos Quentin's RBI single in the sixth.

Batista rebounds

Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give the Mariners the lead for good, and Yuniesky Betancourt added a two-run double in the fourth inning for insurance. The offense made a winner out of Miguel Batista, who struggled early but settled down to earn the victory.
