Buehrle seeks end to winless stretch

Mark Buehrle, who hasn't won since April 6, is able to joke about his matchup against another high-paid but underachieving southpaw in Barry Zito, but he knows in order to help the White Sox win, he needs to concentrate more after bloop singles or broken-bat hits to avoid big innings.

White Sox: The projected ace for the White Sox 2008 staff continues to struggle. He lost his fifth straight decision on Monday, falling to the Angels in a 10-7 final, and has not won since April 6 in Detroit. Buehrle allowed six earned runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, but he deserved a better fate, as a couple of borderline plays in the field resulted in infield hits. Buehrle struck out six and walked one, also giving up a three-run blast to Vladimir Guerrero. Buehrle is 0-1 with a 16.62 ERA lifetime against the Giants.

If Barry Zito can come close to duplicating his body of work against the White Sox, he should have a chance to emerge with his maiden victory of 2008. He has an 8-2 record with a 3.22 ERA against them in 12 starts, with the eight wins his fourth-most against any opponent.

Barry Zito

Giants: Zito continued his march back toward respectability last Monday by allowing the hot-hitting Houston Astros three runs in six innings. He blanked Houston for five innings until Miguel Tejada's sacrifice fly and Lance Berkman's two-run homer tied the score. Zito exited the game after the sixth for a no-decision. In Zito's two starts since being sent to the bullpen to clear his head and work on some aspects of pitching, he has improved his aggressiveness in challenging hitters and has sharpened his location.

Sac flies carry Sox

Left-hander Mark Buehrle allowed one run in 6 2/3 strong innings in winning his second game of the season. The White Sox got sac flies from Carlos Quentin and Orlando Cabrera in the first two innings and then added an RBI single by Paul Konerko in the sixth that scored Jermaine Dye.
