White Sox bullpen becoming a strength

The White Sox bullpen is pitching well, with everyone's roles becoming clearer as the season progresses. It's much better than last season's 'pen, which manager Ozzie Guillen says he doesn't even remember.

White Sox probable pitcher

John Danks

  • LHP
  • (3-3) 2.74 ERA
White Sox: Danks allowed at least one baserunner in every inning that he worked during Tuesday night's loss to the Angels but only had two real jams over 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Danks walked two and struck out five, throwing 69 of his 99 pitches for strikes. He exited with the bases loaded and one out, but Octavio Dotel struck out Erick Aybar and Vladimir Guerrero to leave the left-hander with no decision. Danks has never faced the Giants and has a 0-1 record with a 5.77 ERA in three career Interleague starts against Florida, Houston and Philadelphia.

The Giants, 10 games under .500, have one more game against the White Sox on Sunday. Forgive them if they're looking forward to facing the National League West again starting Monday. The Giants are 8-8 against their own division.

Giants probable pitcher

Matt Cain

  • RHP
  • (2-3) 4.17 ERA
Giants: Cain is coming off one of his strongest outings of the season. Facing the Astros, winners of four games in a row and nine of their previous 10, Cain worked eight innings in a 4-2 Giants victory. Cain also hit his second home run of the season, lifting his batting average to .294 and his slugging percentage to .706. Cain is 2-5 in seven career Interleague starts, although one of them was a one-hit shutout at Oakland in May 2006 and another was a seven-inning effort in a 1-0 loss at Boston last June.

Walker suffers loss

After the Giants rallied to tie it in the seventh, Tyler Walker allowed three runs in the eighth to suffer the loss. Right-hander Matt Cain had a no-hitter through 4 1/3 innings, but it fell apart quickly after that, as he allowed four homers and six runs in the next 2 2/3 innings.
