Tribe looks to Peralta to break slump

Slumping shortstop Jhonny Peralta was benched for two games because of poor play at the plate. Manager Eric Wedge hopes Peralta -- Wedge considers him one of the club's leaders -- can focus better at the plate in his return on Wednesday.

Indians probable pitcher

Paul Byrd

  • RHP
  • (2-3) 3.61 ERA
Indians: Byrd has had trouble keeping the ball in the yard this season, but he rebounded from a three-homer loss against the Yankees with a tremendous outing against the A's on May 13. Byrd went 7 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He had a lot of help from his defense, but he didn't let the A's burn him with any dingers, either. Byrd is 8-2 with a 4.22 ERA in 13 career starts against the White Sox and 4-0 with a 3.67 ERA in five starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

Vazquez focusing on wins, not whiffs

Javier Vazquez needs eight strikeouts to regain the AL lead -- though he does not consider himself a strikeout pitcher. He does, though, possess the commanding fastball -- as well as a strong changeup -- needed to succeed in U.S. Cellular Field, a hitter's park.

White Sox probable pitcher

Javier Vazquez

  • RHP
  • (4-3) 3.53 ERA
White Sox: Vazquez finished with a tough no-decision during Thursday night's series finale in Anaheim, despite the White Sox emerging with a 4-3 victory. Vazquez allowed two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and not issuing a walk, but it was an unearned run produced by a Joe Crede fielding error that removed the right-hander as the pitcher of record. As of the start of the weekend, Vazquez led the American League with 58 strikeouts. Vazquez is 0-1 in his only start against the Indians this season.

Dye job: Sox keep winning (22-24) (25-20)

White Sox 7, Indians 2

Byrd grounded

Paul Byrd didn't allow a hit until Nick Swisher singled with two outs in the fifth, but his outing unraveled in the sixth when he was charged with five runs. Michael Aubrey hit his second homer in as many Major League games to give Byrd and the Tribe a lead in the second inning.

Streak reaches seven

For a second straight game, homers helped the White Sox keep their win streak alive. No-hit by Paul Byrd for 4 2/3 innings, Chicago broke out for five runs in the sixth as Jermaine Dye hit a three-run shot for the first of his two homers. Dye homered again, along with Jim Thome, in the seventh.
