Chi White Sox (30-24) at Tampa Bay (32-22)

When manager Ozzie Guillen changed the White Sox lineup before a contest on May 14, following two straight road losses to the Angels, his plan was to make the alteration a temporary adjustment. After 15 games, of which 12 have been victories, the manager of this first-place attack seems content to leave his lineup alone.

White Sox probable pitcher

Jose Contreras

  • RHP
  • (5-3) 3.06 ERA
White Sox: Contreras had won his previous three starts before getting the no decision against the Angels on Sunday night. And surprisingly, his Sunday night start was his best of the season. Contreras scattered three hits over eight innings and allowed just two runs. He also struck out a season-high 10 batters. Both runs came on a home run by Gary Matthews Jr., in the fourth inning. It was just the third home run Contreras has given up this season. Contreras did not face Tampa Bay in the two teams' only series this season back on April 18-20.

Rays try to dent record vs. Contreras

After struggling to get their offense going on Thursday, the Rays face a daunting task against White Sox right-hander Jose Contreras, who is 5-0 with a 2.89 ERA in eight career appearances against Tampa Bay.

Rays probable pitcher

James Shields

  • RHP
  • (4-3) 3.38 ERA
Rays: Shields received a no-decision Sunday against the Orioles after allowing a 4-1 lead to slip away. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed three earned runs on eight hits and one walk in eight innings. Shields' best pitch has always been his changeup, but he also has a plus fastball and curve and he's added a cutter that has helped him throw inside to left-handers. He is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in two career starts against the White Sox.

Rays win a Cliff-hanger (30-24) (33-22)

Rays 2, White Sox 1

Sox miss chances

It was a night of chances not taken by the White Sox, as the South Siders couldn't take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. Chicago left eight men on base, spoiling a terrific start from Jose Contreras. Contreras had five strikeouts in seven innings, allowing one run.

Walk-off victory

Cliff Floyd led off the ninth inning with a mighty blast off White Sox reliever Scott Linebrink, giving the Rays the win on Friday night. The homer supported strong pitching, led by starter James Shields, who had six strikeouts over six innings pitched. B.J. Upton added an RBI single.
