Tribe trying to change fortunes

Eric Wedge didn't call a meeting to discuss the importance of this road trip with his players. "It's pretty evident," he said. As the Tribe resumes this set with the White Sox, Wedge is hoping the trip isn't going the way its first game indicated.

Indians probable pitcher

Cliff Lee

  • #31 LHP
  • (11-1) 2.34 ERA
Indians: Lee continued his campaign to be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game with another impressive start Thursday against the Giants. And this time he was actually awarded for it. The left-hander went eight innings, striking out a career-high 11 and, thanks mostly to his precisely located fastball, never really had to escape trouble to pick up his 11th win of the season. He continues to be bright spot for the Indians in 2008, especially after a rough 2007, where he was sent to Triple-A Buffalo to work out of a season-long funk. Lee has yet to face the White Sox this season, but he has faced them the most out of any opponent for his career. In 17 appearances -- 15 starts -- Lee is 4-5 with a 6.61 ERA against the White Sox.

For the past several days, Jermaine Dye and Nick Swisher have been at the center of attention in the White Sox lineup. But Jim Thome is doing his best to stay in the conversation. Thome is 4-for-8 in the last two games, with two home runs.

White Sox probable pitcher

John Danks

  • #50 LHP
  • (5-4) 2.62 ERA
White Sox: Danks closed out the month of June with another quality start, hurling six scoreless innings against the Dodgers during Thursday afternoon's series finale. Danks now has thrown 11 straight scoreless innings and ranks third in the American League for lowest ERA. He struck out three and walked four against the Dodgers, throwing 106 pitches overall, and worked out of two jams with a runner on third and less than two outs. Danks has no record in one start against Cleveland this season and has a 1-2 mark with a 4.44 ERA lifetime against the Indians. Danks also picked up his first career Interleague victory and first big league hit on Thursday.

White Sox click in extras (37-47) (48-35)

White Sox 3, Indians 2 (10)

Tough one to lose

Casey Blake's 10th-inning solo homer gave the Tribe hope of evening the series, but the White Sox got to Joe Borowski for two runs in the bottom of the frame to win. Cliff Lee tangled with John Danks for eight innings, allowing one run. Kelly Shoppach hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

'Extra' special win

Forced to extras after John Danks dueled Cliff Lee to a 1-all tie after eight innings, the Sox fell behind when Matt Thornton allowed a solo homer in the 10th. No matter, though, as Alexei Ramirez homered and Orlando Cabrera singled in another run to run Chicago's win streak to six.
