Bankston giving Athletics a boost

Wes Bankston already blends in well with the Athletics, even though he just started his Major League career. Bankston had three hits, including two doubles, and his first RBI on Friday night in the A's 7-1 victory over the White Sox.

Athletics probable pitcher

Greg Smith

  • #23 LHP
  • (5-6) 3.44 ERA
A's: Oakland's lone rookie in the starting rotation, Smith was outstanding his last time out, beating the Angels by holding them to one run -- a solo home run -- on four hits while walking two and striking out three in the first complete game of his career Monday in Anaheim. Owner of one of the best pickoff moves in the game, Smith has nailed an MLB-high eight runners and now controls the opponents' running game on reputation alone. He's pitched more than seven innings only once, on April 29, in part because the A's are being cautious as he closes in on his 2007 Minor League innings total of 122. Smith, who picked up his first big league win by holding the White Sox to six hits over seven innings on April 14, has made 16 starts and has thrown 99 1/3 innings.

Following Saturday night's outing, Gavin Floyd will make one more start prior to the All-Star break. There's no question the first half of the season has been a success for the righty. But Floyd is far from fulfilled, despite his 9-4 record and 3.45 ERA.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • #34 RHP
  • (9-4) 3.45 ERA
White Sox: Floyd looked much better Monday against the Indians than he had in either of his previous two starts. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- and struck out a career-high 10 batters. The only player that got the better of him was Jhonny Peralta, who smacked three of the seven hits he allowed. Two of the hits were doubles and the other was a home run. Floyd attributed the quality start to the return of his offspeed command. He hadn't been able to throw his changeup for strikes in his previous starts. Floyd has never faced the Athletics.

Pretty boy Floyd holds up A's (47-40) (50-37)

White Sox 6, Athletics 1

Smith wild

Greg Smith couldn't get out of the sixth inning, walking six hitters and allowing two home runs. Smith struck out two and allowed four earned runs while Oakland hitters were silenced by his counterpart, Gavin Floyd, who pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings for his 10th win.

Skid halted

Gavin Floyd may not be an American League All-Star this season, but he sure did his best impression of one. Floyd allowed just three hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 3.22 and improving to 10-4 on the season. Three White Sox hitters belted home runs.
