Sox closer duties to be shared

Who will step in as the Sox primary closer while Bobby Jenks is on the disabled list is not clear. For now, manager Ozzie Guillen plans on using a closer-by-committee system.

White Sox probable pitcher

Javier Vazquez

  • #33 RHP
  • (7-7) 4.37 ERA 114 SO
White Sox: Although it ended in defeat, Vazquez produced his best start since May 31 during Thursday's 3-2 loss to Oakland. Vazquez had allowed five runs in each of his last four starts, but gave up just three runs on four hits during the 23rd complete game of his career. Vazquez fanned 10, including seven over the first three innings, giving him 35 career games with double-digit strikeouts. Vazquez threw a season-high 123 pitches, after making a change in mechanics to keep his hands closer to the body during his windup. He has not faced the Royals in 2008 but has a 6-2 career record with a 2.74 ERA against Kansas City and a 2-0 mark at Kauffman Stadium.

Royals looking to improve vs. Sox

The Royals didn't meet up with the White Sox until June 3 this season, and it wasn't pleasant. They were swept in three games. The Royals have not won a season series from the White Sox since 2000. Since then, they've been just 46-88 against the Sox.

Royals probable pitcher

Brian Bannister

  • #19 RHP
  • (7-8) 5.15 ERA 63 SO
Royals: Bannister got knocked around in Friday night's start against the red-hot Rays. The right-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and made an early exit after five innings. He has struggled in road appearances this season, posting a 2-5 record and an 8.36 ERA away from Kauffman Stadium. Although Bannister has been erratic on the mound, his control was not a problem in Friday's loss, as he issued only one walk. With losses in his last two starts, Bannister will look to bounce back against the White Sox. He is 2-1 in five starts vs. Chicago, with a 6.65 ERA.
