Meche trying to get back on track

For Gil Meche, the search is still on as the second half gets under way. The right-hander is looking for a way to regain the good form that he had in the middle of June and will try to do that against the White Sox.

Royals probable pitcher

Gil Meche

  • #55 RHP
  • (6-9) 4.71 ERA 88 SO
Royals: Meche's last outing was July 12 against the Mariners and he zipped through five scoreless innings before being hit by a four-spot in the sixth. He was tagged for 10 hits, the most he's given up this season, in 6 2/3 innings but he walked just one. Meche had no decision, as the Royals came back to win. He was successful in improving his control, making 98 pitches after using up 115 in the 5 1/3 innings of his previous start.

When the White Sox returned to action after the All-Star break a year ago, there wasn't a whole lot to look forward to -- not with a 39-47 record that had them 13 games out of first place. Jermaine Dye sees a difference in the team's mentality.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • #34 RHP
  • (10-5) 3.63 ERA 75 SO
White Sox: Floyd lasted just 2 2/3 innings his last time out at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. He never really had control of any of his pitches against Texas as he walked a career-high seven batters and gave up a season-high six earned runs. Floyd has had a trend of alternating decisions this season, which would put him in line for a victory against Kansas City Saturday. He won his only start against the Royals this season, allowing four runs, two earned, in seven innings while striking out four.

Royals 9, White Sox 1

Gil is great

Gil Meche was outstanding for the Royals, pitching six-plus innings, giving up just one run and had six strikeouts. John Buck hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and the Royals poured it on in eighth, scoring six times against the White Sox bullpen, including a Billy Butler two-run homer and a three-run Mike Aviles double.

Bats held silent

Gavin Floyd gave up one earned run in six innings and had six strikeouts, but the White Sox offense was held down by Gil Meche and the bullpen gave up insurance runs that put the game out of reach for the South Siders. Orlando Cabrera provided the only run for Chicago with a sixth-inning sac fly.
