White Sox begin important road trip

The White Sox begin a 10-game road trip on Friday, and they'll start it with a series against each of their nearest two competitors in the American League Central, the third-place Tigers and second-place Twins. The trip won't make or break the season, but it will have a major impact.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • #34 RHP
  • (10-6) 3.52 ERA 81 SO
White Sox: Despite a quality start against the Royals, Floyd picked up his second loss in a row Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Field. He gave up three runs in the sixth, but only one was earned. Ross Gload hit a hard grounder toward Joe Crede that bounced off his glove and continued rolling into left field. The error led to John Buck's home run the next at-bat and the White Sox never recovered. Floyd walked three more batters in the game, too, having now issued at least three free passes in each of his past three starts. Floyd faced Detroit in back-to-back starts to open the season. He gave up a combined three runs in 13 1/3 innings to pick up his first two wins.

Two months ago, Detroit was 10 games out, but now the club is just 5 1/2 games back of first, and could move up even further this weekend in a three-game set vs. the division-leading White Sox.

Tigers probable pitcher

Nate Robertson

  • #29 LHP
  • (6-8) 5.69 ERA 75 SO
Tigers: Robertson took the mound last Saturday at Baltimore with a six-run lead, but it was gone by the end of the third. So was Robertson, whom the Orioles hit around for seven runs on eight hits -- six of them singles -- over 2 1/3 innings. He has battled high hit totals in four of his last five starts, the exception being nine innings of one-run ball July 6 at Seattle. He's keeping the ball on the ground, but they aren't resulting in the outs that he needs. Robertson has split his two starts against the White Sox this season, including 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball to beat them on June 10 in Detroit.

Dye tattoos Jones for White Sox win (58-43) (52-50)

White Sox 6, Tigers 5

Last gasp comeback

The outlook was bleak for the White Sox in the seventh inning, when the Tigers' Carlos Guillen erased a three-run rally with a solo homer that put Chicago down one. But after the Sox were down to their last strike, Carlos Quentin singled and Jermaine Dye came through with a game-winning homer.

One gets away

After Joel Zumaya let a three-run lead slip away in the seventh inning, Carlos Guillen put the Tigers ahead with a solo homer. But the bullpen faltered again in the ninth inning, when closer Todd Jones couldn't shut the door and gave up a two-run home run to White Sox slugger Jermaine Dye.
