Game Recap |
 |
Playing in front of the hometown crowd, Sandy Alomar led the American League to a 3-1 victory by hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning. The AL victory ended a three-game losing streak.
Coming in his only at-bat, the two-out line drive came against San Francisco's Shawn Estes and earned Alomar the MVP award. Alomar earned the distinction of being the first player to win the MVP award in his home ballpark.
In the first year in which fans elected a starting designated hitter, Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners started the scoring with a second inning solo blast.
The sellout crowd was treated to a highlight for the ages when Colorado Rockies representative, Larry Walker, stepped in to face intimidating lefty, Randy Johnson. Walker, who led the majors with a .398 average, backed out of an Interleague Game against Johnson earlier in the season, but there was no hiding this time.
In a scene reminiscent of his 1993 performance against John Kruk, Johnson threw the first pitch over Walker's head. In response, Walker laughed, turned his helmet backward moved to the right side of the plate, and took ball two. Walker eventually drew a walk from the Seattle fireballer.
Kansas City's Jose Rosado wound up the winner despite giving a solo home run to Atlanta Braves' catcher, Javy Lopez, in the seventh inning. One of seven Braves on the National League roster, Lopez was responsible for the NL's tying run by knocking a pitch off the left field foul pole. The shot off Rosado made Lopez the 11th player to homer in his first All-Star at-bat. Before Lopez connected, the NL had managed just one hit, a single by Jeff Blauser of the Braves, off Toronto ace Roger Clemens.
David Cone, Justin Thompson, and Pat Hentgen combined to set down eight consecutive batters for the American League before Lopez connected off Rosado.
Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Has Cleveland ever been any louder? Doubtful. Catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. made the most of his first All-Star Game appearance in five seasons and only at-bat of the contest. The Indians slugger belted a game-deciding homer off Shawn Estes in the seventh inning in front of a thrilled home crowd. Alomar was named the game MVP as well, at the first Midsummer Classic at Jacobs Field. American League pitchers did their part too, limiting the National League lineup to three hits. In the end, it was AL 3, NL 1.
