Hitting stats
The Red Sox still managed the best offense in the Majors in 2005. Boston led
all of baseball in batting average (.280), slugging percentage (.453),
on-base percentage (.356), runs (900), hits (1,568), RBIs (853) and walks
(645). The only major offensive category the Red Sox didn't reign in was
home runs. Boston belted 196 homers, which was good enough for fifth in the
American League and sixth in the Majors.

David Ortiz led Boston hitters with 47 home runs and 148 RBIs. Manny Ramirez
was right behind the designated hitter in the order and in numbers; the slugger had 45 homers and 144 RBIs. Johnny Damon (.316) led the team in batting average.

The pitching staff lost Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe to free agency in the offseason and then saw Curt Schilling and Keith Foulke suffer injuries in 2005. The result? The staff finished 11th in the American League with a 4.76 ERA. Boston ranked ninth in the league in strikeouts (952) and 11th in earned runs allowed (751). The bright side was that the Red Sox were ranked third in the AL with only 431 walks issued.MLB pitching stats Tim Wakefield led the starters in wins (16), losses (12), ERA (4.15), innings (225 1/3), strikeouts (150) and complete games (3). Schilling went 8-8 a year after going 21-6 for the Red Sox and also spent time in an injury-plagued bullpen. Mike Timlin and Foulke each had 19 saves.

The Red Sox also turned the third-lowest number of double plays (135) in the
league and committed 109 errors, which ranked 10th in the AL. In his first
season at shortstop for the Red Sox, Edgar Renteria made 30 errors and
posted a .954 fielding percentage.
