The White Sox have talked about filling their vacancy at third base in-house with Josh Fields, but that might not be the only scenario they're discussing.
According to an ESPN.com report, the Sox have shown an interest in Marlins third baseman Jorge Cantu, who has also reportedly been a target of the Giants.
Cantu, who turns 27 next month, has played in all or part of the last five seasons with the Rays, Reds and Marlins. Last year, he batted .277 with a career-high 29 homers and a team-high 95 RBIs.
Though his career began with great promise in his first full season in 2005, when he batted .286 with 28 homers and 117 RBIs for the Rays, Cantu had a subpar 2006, and he began 2007 with the Rays' Triple-A club in Durham. The Marlins signed him to a Minor League deal before the '08 season, and he won the starting third base job in Spring Training camp.
Cantu is far from a dazzling defender. The Marlins, in fact, are considering moving him from third to first, if they don't trade him. The Marlins might be looking to trade Cantu, who made $500,000 in '08, because he is due for a big raise in arbitration. The team also has the newly acquired Emilio Bonifacio as a candidate to take over at third.
In recent days, Cantu has been linked to the Giants. Reports had indicated the Giants and Marlins were discussing a swap in which Cantu would go to San Francisco and left-hander Jonathan Sanchez would go to Florida, but it appears no deal has been finalized, especially now that the White Sox seem to be involved.
As far as what the Sox might have to give up to get Cantu, the Marlins are in need of catching help, and the White Sox have depth in that area -- in the form of prospect Cole Armstrong -- now that prospect Tyler Flowers has joined the organization in the Javier Vazquez trade with the Atlanta Braves.
