Arizona's Curt Schilling and Philadelphia's Jim Thome named NL Pepsi Co-Players of the Week
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Jim Thome, who hit five home runs and collected 10 RBI, and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Curt Schilling, who was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, were named the National League Pepsi Co-Players of the Week for August 11-17.
In six games, Thome hit .318 (7-for-22) and scored six runs, while leading the Majors with a 1.045 slugging percentage. He belted two-run homers in each of the last three games against the Cardinals as the Phillies won five of six games last week. This was Thome's fourth overall Pepsi Player of the Week Award, first in the National League.
In his two starts, Schilling allowed only seven hits in 15.0 innings and did not allow a run. He walked only three and struck out 23 batters, passing Don Drysdale for 25th place on the career strikeout list with 2,494. Schilling struck out 11 in 7.0 innings in a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on August 12, and yesterday allowed only one hit in 8.0 innings, while striking out 12 batters in Arizona's 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Other players nominated include: Pittsburgh's Reggie Sanders (.320, 5 HR, 7 RBI); Cliff Floyd (league-leading .579 average) of the Mets; Florida's Miguel Cabrera (.385, 2 HR, 6 RBI); Bobby Abreu (.478, 4 RBI) of the Phillies; Shawn Green (.429, 4 RBI) and Adrian Beltre (.281, 3 HR, 10 RBI) of the Dodgers; Tino Martinez (.333, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the Cardinals; Montreal's Zach Day (2-0, 0.69 ERA) and Montreal's Livan Hernandez (1-0, 1.00 ERA); Houston's Wade Miller (2-0, 1.50 ERA); and Mark Prior (1-0, 1.00 ERA) of the Cubs.
Thome and Schilling will each receive a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece as National League Pepsi Co-Players of the Week.
