CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have designated right-handed pitcher Jason Grilli for assignment.

Grilli, 28, went 2-3 with a 7.40 ERA (37 ER/45.0 IP) and one complete game in eight starts with the White Sox in 2004 and 9-9 with a 4.83 ERA (82 ER/152.2 IP) and two complete games in 25 starts with Class AAA Charlotte.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has gone 40-44 with a 4.61 ERA (351 ER/684.2 IP) in 123 minor-league starts and 5-5 with a 6.78 ERA (37 ER/45.0 IP) in 15 major-league games (14 starts).

The White Sox have 10 days to either trade, outright to the minor leagues or release Grilli, who was selected by the White Sox in the December 2003 Rule 5 Draft.

The move was necessitated by Thursday's signing of free agent infielder Tadahito Iguchi. The White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
