CHICAGO -- Prior to tonight's game vs. Texas, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard from Triple-A Charlotte. Richard takes the roster spot of right-hander Adam Russell, who was optioned to Charlotte following yesterday's game vs. Kansas City.

Richard, 24, has split the 2008 season between Charlotte and Class AA Birmingham, combining to go 12-6 with a 2.44 ERA (33 ER/121.2 IP), 82 strikeouts and two complete games in 19 starts. He allowed 20 walks and held the opposition to a combined .206 (91-442) average.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Richard began the season with Birmingham, going 6-6 with a 2.47 ERA (23 ER/83.2 IP) and 53 strikeouts in 13 starts to earn a promotion to Charlotte. He won all six of his starts with the Knights, posting a 2.37 ERA (10 ER/38.0 IP) with four walks, 29 strikeouts, 25 hits allowed and one complete game.

Richard, a Lafayette, Ind. native, was the starting pitcher for the United States at the All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium on July 13, allowing one unearned run in 1.0 IP. He also has been named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team for the Beijing Games in August.

He attended the University of Michigan, where he played both baseball and quarterback on the football team. He went 8-15 for 52 yards for the Wolverines in 2004 and earned academic All-Big Ten honors.

Richard, who has no Major League experience, will wear uniform No. 54. To make room for Richard on the 40-man roster, the Sox transferred left-handed pitcher Andrew Sisco (Tommy John surgery) from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
