White Sox Un-Retire Aparicio's Number, Vizquel to Wear No. 11 During 2010 Season
Vizquel To Wear Uniform Number with Blessing and Support From Fellow Countryman,
CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox have un-retired uniform No. 11, the number worn by Hall of Fame shortstop Luis Aparicio, for the 2010 season, during which it will be worn by Omar Vizquel, the team's newly acquired 11-time Gold Glove infielder.
Vizquel, a native of Venezuela, will don the number as a tribute to Aparicio, who is the first and only Venezuelan to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"If there is one player who I would like to see wear my uniform number with the White Sox, it is Omar Vizquel," said Aparicio. "I have known Omar for a long time. Along with being an outstanding player, he is a good and decent man."
"I feel privileged to have the opportunity to wear the same uniform number with the White Sox as the great Luis Aparicio," said Vizquel. "It is a great honor for me."
Vizquel is the all-time leader among shortstops in games played (2,681) and double plays (1,722) and the only shortstop in major-league history to play in at least 21 different seasons. He is a three-time American League All-Star (1998-99, 2002), has played in 57 career postseason games, including the 1995 and 1997 World Series with the Indians, and captained the Venezuelan team in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.
Aparicio was named American League Rookie of the Year as a member of the White Sox in 1956. The 10-time All-Star shortstop, who played 10 seasons with the White Sox, collected nine Gold Glove Awards during his playing career and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984, the same year his uniform was retired by the White Sox.
This marks the second time the White Sox have un-retired a uniform number. In 1996, the White Sox un-retired Harold Baines's uniform No. 3 upon his return to the team. The club did the same in 2000 when Baines returned for his third and final stint with the Sox as a player. Baines's uniform number was originally retired in 1989.
A live press conference with Vizquel discussing the honor of wearing Luis Aparicio's uniform number will be streamed live today at 3 p.m. on whitesox.com and orgullosox.com (the team's Spanish website).
