Thome passes legends with No. 513
White Sox slugger alone at No. 19, ahead of Mathews, Banks
By Scott Merkin / MLB.com
Thome's blast broke a tie with the Cubs' Ernie Banks and the Braves' Eddie Mathews, moving into sole possession of 19th place on the career home runs list.
Thome launched a 2-1 pitch from LaTroy Hawkins into the left-center-field stands with one out in the fifth inning, running his total to six home runs for the year and increasing the White Sox lead at the time to 6-3. Thome has four home runs and 11 RBIs in his last nine games, carrying a .370 average over that stretch.
Next on the list for Thome is former White Sox slugger Frank Thomas, who ranks 18th with 516 home runs and signed with another of his former clubs, the A's, on Thursday.
With a 30-home run output in 2008, Thome actually could pass the likes of Ted Williams, Willie McCovey (both at 521), Jimmie Foxx (534) and Mickey Mantle at 536. Thome ranks fourth behind Thomas, Alex Rodriguez, who stayed at 522 career home runs through his inactivity in this series, and Ken Griffey Jr. (597) on the active list.
