Take a number: Griffey to wear No. 17

New acquisition doesn't request to take Swisher's numeral

KANSAS CITY -- The Dirty 30 is alive and well.

Contrary to reports from Thursday, Nick Swisher will keep jersey No. 30 and newly acquired Ken Griffey Jr. will use No. 17.

"I don't want to be a disruption to the team going in there," Griffey said. "I heard Nick is a little out there, something about some 'Dirty 30' to 'Dirty One' so I'm going to stick with 17 and be happy with it."

On Thursday, Swisher said he was willing to give up his number, and said he'd start going by "Dirty One" instead of his current nickname. He said he got about 10 text messages from friends asking why he'd change numbers. His reply was that it was a number, not a big deal.

After Griffey picked 17, it's evident he has the same opinion about jersey numbers not being important.

"They gave me a list of numbers," he said about his choice of 17, "and that was one of them that was open."
