"But I didn't know the reason was he didn't want to read it by himself," said Wise with a laugh, when talking about his foray into late-night television. "I would have just told him to go ahead and do it."
Buehrle and Wise will be joined by Josh Fields, whose grand slam provided all the offense the southpaw would need to hurl his second career no-hitter Thursday against the Rays. Their reading of the Top 10, which is sure to center on benefits derived from being part of a perfect game, will be taped at the Metrodome prior to Monday's series opener against the Twins.
Wise readily admits that he knows of the innovative late night host. But his television usually is tuned to other programming if he's home at that 10:30 p.m. CT time.
"My TV is on 'SportsCenter' or something like that," Wise said. "But I don't really watch late-night TV."
Plenty of Wise's friends and family members will be tuned into "Letterman" on Monday, and the same goes for Buehrle and Fields' support system. Maybe it will be the start of a second career for the talented trio of White Sox players.
"I doubt that," Wise said. "I'm excited about doing it. I'm anxious to see what we are going to have to do."
