In 2012, Karkovice will be one of the White Sox representatives live at the First-Year Player Draft. He will be joined by White Sox manager of youth baseball initiatives Kevin Coe.
The annual First-Year Player Draft takes place this year from June 4-6, beginning with the first round and Comp Round A on Monday, June 4, at 6 p.m. CT. The first night of the event will be broadcast live on MLB Network and streamed live on MLB.com. Rounds 2-40 will also be streamed live on MLB.com on June 5-6.
MLB.com's coverage, sponsored by CenturyLink, will include Draft Central, the Top 100 Draft Prospects list, Draft Tracker, a live interactive application that includes a searchable database of every Draft-eligible player, and Draft Caster. You can also keep up to date by following @MLBDraft on Twitter. And get into the Draft conversation by tagging your tweets with #mlbdraft.
Bud Selig, the Commissioner of Baseball, will announce all the first-round picks, with the White Sox selecting 13th overall, but Karkovice and Coe will be sitting at the White Sox draft table and will phone in the team's choice. When the White Sox pick 48th overall, a Comp Round A pick for free agent Mark Buehrle signing with the Marlins, Karkovice and/or Coe will announce the selection.
Karkovice hit 96 career home runs and drove in 335 but earned the nickname of "Officer Karkovice" from White Sox television play-by-play man Ken "Hawk" Harrelson because of his high percentage of nailing would-be basestealers. Karkovice topped the AL in caught stealing percentage in 1989 (48 percent), 1990 (50 percent) and 1993 (53.8 percent), and was a teammate of current manager Robin Ventura from 1989 to 1997.
Coe has worked extensively with and managed teams in the White Sox Amateur City Elite program, giving competitive baseball opportunities to players from Chicago's inner city.
Outfielder Keenyn Walker was the White Sox top pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, going at 47th overall in Comp Round A. Wednesday's starting pitcher Chris Sale was the team's top pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, selected at 13th overall.
