The uniforms consist of the red, navy blue and primary white pullover jersey with “SOX” printed across the chest. The left sleeve will also feature the vintage patch commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1933 All-Star Game at Old Comiskey Park. The tri-color cap with “SOX” again printed across the front will complete the replicas.
The ’83 “Winning Ugly” club, led by manager Tony La Russa, featured White Sox legends such as Harold Baines, Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk, Ron Kittle, Greg Luzinski and Tom Paciorek. Together, the team scrapped its way to the American League West title before falling to the Orioles in the American League Championship Series.
“The 1983 White Sox remain a team that is near and dear to an entire generation of Chicago sports fans,” said Brooks Boyer, senior vice president of sales and marketing, in a statement. “This season marks the 30 year anniversary of that Winning Ugly Sox team, and we plan to honor that fan favorite team with these special throwback uniforms and a 1983 version of the ‘retro racers’ that we first unveiled last season.”
This year’s promotion comes a year after the White Sox honored the 1972 team on Sundays last season. Along with replica uniforms, last year’s commemorations also included a “retro race” during the seventh-inning stretch, which will return this year with a trio of racers that includes “Racing Harold” (Baines), “Racing Pudge” (Fisk) and “Racing Kitty” (Kittle).
