MLBPA membership votes in favor of naming Michael Weiner as MLBPA Executive Director
NEW YORK -- MLBPA Executive Director Don Fehr announced today that the membership of the Major League Baseball Players Association has voted overwhelmingly (1,055 to 4) to endorse the Executive Board’s recommendation that Michael Weiner become the MLBPA’s next Executive Director. "I congratulate Michael on securing this extraordinary vote of confidence," said Fehr.
On July 7, 2009, the Executive Board announced its preliminary decision to name Weiner as Fehr's successor. The Board directed then that the matter be put to a vote of the full membership -- players, managers, coaches and trainers. Weiner spent the next several weeks traveling around the country to meet with the Union's members on every club, where he explained his vision, answered questions and discussed the tasks and challenges facing the Union.
The Executive Board intends to take a formal vote to finalize the succession in Union leadership during its annual meeting, scheduled for November 30 – December 3, 2009, in Scottsdale, AZ. Fehr announced on June 22, his intention to step down as Executive Director, a position he has held since December, 1983.
The MLBPA Executive Board is comprised of Player Representatives, Alternate Player Representatives and members of the Executive Subcommittee.
