  • July 27, 1935

    2B Jose "Chile" Gomez, a native of Mexico, becomes the first Hispanic player to appear in a Phillies uniform. He is hitless in four at-bats in a 5-0 win over the Braves in Boston.

  • July 27, 1966

    Pitching classic in Dodger Stadium as Dodgers edge Phillies, 2-1, in 12 innings. Winner LHP Sandy Koufax strikes out 16 in 11 innings while loser RHP Jim Bunning fans 12 in his 11-inning outing.

  • July 29, 1983

    Phillies purchase contract of RHP Larry Andersen from Seattle Mariners.

  • July 29, 1984

    2B Juan Samuel and CF Von Hayes are the first Phillies to hit back-to-back home runs to lead off a game, a 6-4 win over Montreal at the Vet.

  • July 29, 1989

    Phillies retire LHP Steve Carlton's #32 in pre-game ceremony before 47,277 at the Vet.

  • July 30, 1950

    RHP Robin Roberts tosses his third consecutive shutout, 10-0, against the Pirates at Shibe Park. Others were 2-0 at Cincinnati on July 22 and 1-0 vs. the Cubs on July 25.

    With the largest crowd, an estimated 28,000, ever to attend the ceremony, 3B Mike Schmidt and OF Richie Ashburn are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    2B Manny Trillo's major league record for consecutive errorless games ends at 89 when he makes a seventh-inning error in a 2-0 win over Chicago. He also sets a ML record for consecutive errorless chances, 479, during the streak.

    LHP Steve Carlton, the winningest pitcher in Phillies history, is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    St. Louis scores three in the top of the 12th at Veterans Stadium when it the game is halted by rain. The Zamboni machine, used to vacuum the water from the artificial playing surface, breaks down...

    ...Cardinals file a protest and the NL rules a 3-3 suspended game, to be completed prior to the regular game on September 7. When the game resumed, Phillies score three in their 12th to tie before St. Louis wins in 13, 9-6.

  • August 2, 1894

    CF Billy Hamilton sets major league record for most consecutive games scoring a run when he crosses plate in 24th consecutive game as Phillies beat Brooklyn Dodgers, 9-8, at Baker Bowl.

  • August 2, 1919

    1B Fred Luderus plays in his 479th consecutive game for the Phillies, breaking the Major League Baseball record held by Eddie Collins of the Chicago White Sox. The streak began on June 2, 1916 and ended after 533 games with the 1920 season opener.

  • August 2, 1970

    2B Tony Taylor hits an ultimate grand slam (trailing by three runs in the last inning) to give the Phillies a 7-6 win over San Francisco at Connie Mack Stadium.

  • August 2, 1984

    Phillies beat Cardinals, 3-2, in St. Louis. Larry Andersen's club record for relief pitchers of pitching 32 2/3rds straight scoreless innings ends when Cardinals score in bottom of the eighth inning with two out.

  • August 2, 1986

    Phillies set a club record with five triples in beating the Chicago Cubs at the Vet, 12-2, on a Saturday afternoon NBC telecast. LF Gary Redus has two; one each for C John Russell, SS Steve Jeltz and 2B Juan Samuel.
